Notes
!SOURCE: "Descendants of Elnathan Whipple," email from N. Combs to the Whipple
Website, 24 Feb 2003. Cites Vital Record of Rhode Island, 1636-1850 (birth).
!SOURCE: "Descendants of Henry Rice Jerauld," email from Norma Roberts
(email hidden) to Weldon Whipple, 12 Sep 2009. Notes the
following:
- His grandfather Henry Rice willed him $24 [S-242]. Dutee
Jerauld, his other grandfather, left him his Susquehanna lands, to be equally
divided with his uncles Gorton and Caleb.
- S-242 Warwick Wills,
5:119.
- Warwick Wills, 5:212.
- According to "The Life and Times of Samuel
Gorton" he was a Sea Captain and lost his property in the War of 1812.
- In
the 1810 census for Arlington Twp., Bennington Co., Vermont is a Niles Geralds
(Jerauld) 2 males over 45, 1 male 16-26(Could be Henry Rice Jerauld, right
age), 2 females 16-26, 1 female 10-18, 1 female 0-10. And also a Thomas Geralds
(Jerauld) living in Warren or Hancock Twp., Addison Co., Vermont in 1810. This
Niles Jerauld is probably a son of Dutee Jerauld (brother to James Arnold
Jerauld and uncle to Henry Rice Jerauld) or somehow related. It looks as though
maybe Niles cousins [Thomas in Addison Co] and [Henry Rice Jerauld] (Henry and
Thomas both being sons of James Arnold Jerauld, James being a brother to Dutee)
were also in Vermont at the same time. Henry may be living with his cousin
Niles Jerauld. I believe this to be so because two houses away is Samuel Buck
(see his notes, he lived also in Bennington Vermont, and in his household are 2
children to be the right age to be Polly and Samuel Jr)) who I believe to be
the father of Mary (Polly) Buck who married Henry Rice Jerauld.
- In the 1820
census for Nelson, Madison Co., NY is Henry as Henry Geralds.
- The 2 boys and
1 girl are their first 3 children. Close by are his brother-in-laws, Lemuel
Richardson and Robert Hazard.
- Maybe he died in Nelson, Madison Co., NY. We
know he was there in 1820. Need to try and find his wife and where she was
living in the 1830 census. Maybe by then she was married to Mr
Carpenter.
- From the "History of Madison Co." by Hammon, town of Lebanon in
Madison County, "(1815) northwest of the center of the town was Ezra Gates, Ira
Lamb, Thomas JERRELS..."; and "The Baptist Church of Lebanon was formed June
26, 1816...Elder Thomas Jeril was ordained on that day and became their first
pastor; and, in the town of Georgetown "Jesse Jerrold came in 1816, and located
on Lot No. 35." Could the above surnames really be Jerauld???? I have fould the
Jerauld name spelled many differnt ways. I need to do more work on them.
- The
1820 Madison County New York census lists Henry GERALDS at Nelson.
- I believe
that Henry probably really did die in Russia, Herkimer Co., NY as I have been
told by other Jerauld/Gorton researchers. I just haven't found where yet. Maybe
he moved there because his wife's parents were living there See their notes.
Both of them are buried there also.
- The 1880 census entry on his son, Harvey
Jerauld (in Knox Co.,Illinois), helps confirm Henry is our ancestor. Harvey's
census entry notes his father was born in Rhode Island.
