Notes
!SOURCE: "Descendants of Henry Rice Jerauld," email from Norma Roberts
(email hidden) to Weldon Whipple, 12 Sep 2009. Cites/notes the
following:- I believe Harvey to be a corruption of the French name Hervey
(pronounced her-va, long a) but where in his ancestry it came from is still a
mystery.
- Harvey was only 11 years old when his father died. His mother
remarried and perhaps there wasn't much interaction with his father's side of
the family.
- He came to Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois, in the
(according to Annals of Knox County-Commemorating Centenial of Admission of
Illinois as a State of the Union in 1818 by Ruth B. Ragsdale) Spring of 1837.
It also states that some of the men who came singly came by water (Erie Canal,
Lake Erie, the Ohio canal, the Ohio River, and the Mississippi and Illinois
rivers) as far as Chicago, which was then a village of a few hundred
inhabitants, and then by horseback the remainder of the way. Families came by
wagons cover in canvas to protect them from the weather, drawn by strong
horses. Judging from the record of the names of the towns and villages touched
along the route, their line of travel was much the same as that followed by the
Michigan Central Railroad today.
- Since he came from Herkimer Co., New
York he may have traveled with some of the Ferris brothers. Henry Ferris had
already settled in Galesburgh Colony before 1836 and then his brother followed.
Henry spent the winter of 1835-36 in a log cabin in Henderson Grove of the
Galesburg Colony. Henry Ferris married Elizabeth Hudson who was a sister to
Harvey Jerauld's wife Maria L Hudson.
- Harvey was a native of New York
(according to the 1871 Atlas) and was a farmer living in Section 27 of
Galesburg Township.
- 1840 census shows Harvey Jerauld living at
Galesburg, Knox Co., Illinois.
- 1850 Knox Co., Illinois-NE Township
Census, Household 648 shows family as:
- Harvey Jerauld age 34 M Farmer

Close by in household 654 is Maria's
sister (Elizabeth) and mother (Keturah age 62 b. NH) in the house of her
brother-in law Henry Ferris. See their notes.
- In 1860 census
the family is shown same place ( Harvy Jerrolds) RE $25,000 PP $1,000. One
house away is Maria's sister Elizabeth Ferris and her family.
