Cites notes of a record in Humboldt County (CA) Courthouse, vol. 926-46 dated 2 Feb 1933, apparently recording the detailf of his accidental death: "accident - burning cabin; 7 miles south of Miranda - suffocation." Gives birth Oct 1889 NY (1900 Little Valley, Cattaraugus, NY census) OR 2 Oct 1888 Salamanca, Cattaraugus, NY. Buried in Salamanca, Cattaraugus, NY. Also notes the following:

the courthouse record also states that he was a 1st class yeoman, U.S. Navy, 25 years, and that he resided in CA for 10 years. The "informant" was Mrs. W.H. Whipple, 1782 Sanchez St., San Francisco, CA
in the 1910 census "Willis H. Whipple, age 21, single, b. NY, is a Yeoman 2nd class on the U.S. Ship Paducah, U.S. Navy, in the Military & Naval Forces census AND he is the enumerator!
Don't know when he married, but he is single in the 1930 census in San Francisco, residing in the "Army & Navy YMCA", listed as "a single man" on a "Bargain and Sale Deed" recorded 13 Oct 1932 in the County of Humboldt, CA
In the 1930 census he is Retired US Navy, served in World War (I).
