!SOURCE: Email from Stephen Chanko (email hidden) to Charles M. Whipple Jr., 25 Feb 2014. He writes:
My theory is that my Mary Whipple, who married Daniel Scott is the daughter of John Whipple III and Lydia Hoare (John Whipple III being the son of John Whipple II and his wife Mary Olney). The first source of this couple, Daniel Scott and Mary Whipple is their intention, dated 4 April 1724, in the "Vital Records of Atttleborough, Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849" published by the Essex Institute, Salem, Massachusetts in 1934, which I have attach, and is noted as follows:The above is strictly their intention, and not the actual marriage. The actual marriage did not take place until May 24, 1724, which is noted in th "Vital Record of Rhode Island 1636-1850 First Series Birth, Marriages and Deaths" by James N. Arnold. I have attach, and is noted as follows:
- page 548 - "Scott (Scot), Daniel, of A., and Mary Whippl[e] of Providence, int. April 4, 1724"
- page 602 - "Whipple, Mary, of Providence, and Daniel Scott of A., int. April 4, 1724"
The above Mary Whipple, noted in the Vital Record of Rhode Island 1636-1850, notes here date of birth as 21 June 1703 and her parents being John and Lydia Whipple.
- page 165 - "Scott Daniel, of Attleboro and Mary Whipple, of Providence; m. by Richard Waterman, Justice, May 24, 1724"
- page 198 - "Whipple Mary, Daniel Scott, May 24, 1724"
I know your book mentions her date of birth being 21 June 1708. Not sure of the source for that notation, but you do mention a Mercy Whipple being born on 21 June 1703. Could Mercy and Mary being the same individual, or could Mercy and Mary be twins? If Mary Whipple is actually born on 21 June 1703 then she would have been approximately 22 years of age at the time of her first child, Judith Scott birth on 29 September 1725. If Mary was actually born on 21 June 1708 she would have been 17 years old.In your book you mention of John Whipple III challenging the Will of his dead father, John Whipple II, and his possible first son Job Whipple being born 25 December 1688, which is just after John Whipple III marriage to Lydia Hoare on 9 November 1688. It appears from your book John Whipple III may had some character flaws during his life time, which makes me wonder if Mary Whipple and Daniel Scott were unable to marry in the family church in Providence, which resulted in Mary and Daniel being married by Richard Waterman, Justice. Given John Whipple II and III status in the community, not unusual to have someone of Richard Waterman's status marrying a child of those with status in the community, as Richard Waterman was a Deputy of Providence in the General Assembly (noted in the "Proceedings of the General Assembly, held for the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, at Newport, the 5th day of Mary, 1724").Given the records noted this Mary Whipple being from Providence, and her husband Daniel Scott being of Attleboro, Massachusetts, I did some further investigation to determine what other Mary Whipple's were living at the time so we could eliminate all other Mary Whipple known to be born before or after my Mary Whipple of 21 June 1703/08.
- page 256 - "Whipple Mary, of John and Lydia, June 21, 1703"
I would also like to note that David Whipple (son of Capt. John Whipple and Sarah) and his wife Hannah lived a number of years in Rebohoth, Massachusetts after leaving Providence, Rhode Island. A number of their children, Israel, Jeremiah, William, Sarah, and Hannah remained in the Rebohoth and Attleboro area, and also died in Attleboro, with the exception of Hannah Whipple who died in Rebohoth. As a result it would not be unusual to assume that John Whipple III and Lydia (Hoare) Whipple and their daughter Mary Whipple maybe visited their cousins Israel, Jeremiah, William, Sarah and Hannah. As a result Mary Whipple, daughter of John Whipple and Lydia (Hoare) Whipple, may had met Daniel Whipple and subsequently became close. The communities during the time knew one another and attended local churches or were active in community affairs.Another thing that I noticed was the naming of Daniel Scott and Mary Whipple's children, which I have noted below:
- Mary Whipple, daughter of Israel Whipple and Mary Wilmarth of Attleboro, Massachusetts, married Jabez Brown on 18 November 1718, Providence, Rhode Island. Israel Whipple being the son of David Whipple, who was the son of Capt. John Whipple and his wife Sarah.
- Mary Whipple, daughter of Benjamin and Ruth (Mathewson) Whipple, was born 3 March 1694 and likely to old to be the mother of Daniel Scott's children.
- Mary Whipple, daughter of Col. Joseph Whipple and his wife Alice was born 9 April 1704 in Providence, Rhode Island and died 8 December 1733. She married Charles Bordin. Mary (Whipple) and Daniel Scott had further children John in 1733 and Mary Scott in 1735, so this Mary could not be the same individual.
Lastly, I will note that Daniel Scott and Mary (Whipple) Scott subsequently moved from Attleboro, Massachusetts to the town of Scituate, Rhode Island. There Daniel and Mary (Whipple) Scott had John, Mary, and James Scott, which are noted in the meeting notes of Scituate, Rhode Island, which I have visited and took photos since they would not allow photo copies to be made of the meeting minute books. Scituate, Rhode Island was part of Providence until 1731. Scituate was first settled in 1710 by emigrants from Scituate, Massachusetts. The first town meeting was held at the Angell Tavern in South Scituate, with Stephen Hopkins elected as the first moderator and Joseph Brown as clerk.I am hoping to visit the State Archives of Rhode Island in hopes that I may locate a Will or Administration of John Whipple III. I do not know there exists a Administration, Book A, page 426, dated 1741 and another Book A, Page 600, dated 1752. Could one of these possibly be the Administration of John Whipple III, who likely died after 3 June 1737.
- Judith Scott - likely named in honor of Daniel's mother Judith, or Mary's sister Judith Whipple
- Daniel Scott - likely named in honor of his father Daniel Scott
- Abigail Scott
- Joseph Scott
- John Scott - maybe name in honor of Mary Whipple's father John Whipple III
- Mary Scott - likely named in honor of her mother Mary Whipple
- James Scott

!SOURCE: Red MacDougall's Genealogy (indexed in RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project) gives Mary's birth 9 Apr 1704 in Providence, Rhode Island. This date seems to indicate that Mary is the same person as the Mary Whipple who married Charles Bordin or Bardin on 29 Oct 1721. Charles M. Whipple, in email to Weldon Whipple on 18 Jun 2004, states that this Mary (who married Daniel Scott) can't possibly be the wife of Charles Barden. In reference to the Mary Whipple who married Charles Barden, Charles writes:
"The tombstone inscription on MaryWhipple's (RIN 6162) headstone in the North Burial Ground is:
In memory of Mary wife of Capt Charles Bardin youngest daughter of Col. Joseph Whipple & Alice his wife died Dec. 8 1733 aged 29 yrs & 8 mos.Her headstone is immediately to the left of Capt. John and Sarah's. Her husband and possible children are not buried there. She could have not likely married a Scott in 1724 as he is not mentioned. As she died in 1733 the Scott children born later as shown on the genweb could not have been hers."
