He was my dad's (Marshall Lofland Whipple and still living) grandfather. He was BORN Cephus Galusha Whipple. We had a relative who INSISTED it was Charles Galusha Whipple and stated she knew it because she had his birth certificate. She did NOT have his birth certificate because they didn't HAVE birth certificates at that time. What she had was his marriage certificate, because my mother sent it to her, and by the time of his wedding, he'd gotten pretty thoroughly fed up with a name like Cephus (who wouldn't) and wrote Charles Galusha Whipple on everything. He was BORN Cephus Galusha Whipple. My dad's comment was "He was my grandfather - I think I know what his name was!"

Ah - found the note on which I wrote about Cephus -"Samuel Elijah Whipple had a brother named Cephus Galusha Whipple. He named his SON Cephus after his BROTHER Cephus."

Whipple {7225}, informant for his father's Missouri death certificate, must have known that his father preferred the name 'Charles' instead of Cephus, as Charles G. Whipple is the name recorded on the Missouri death certificate (#12006}. The picture of his gravestone in the L'Eau Qui Court Cemetery, Niobrara, Knox, NE is entered as Chas. G. Whipple."
