As a very young child Bert was my favorite uncle. Dad and I would stay with Bert and Mary in Kirkland as we visited dad's family. What's odd is that Bert and Mary had only one child who died of a congenital disorder before he reached puberty, or so I was always told, so I'm more than a little puzzled as to how Bert Whipple could be anyone's grandfather. I'm also perplexed about the Blackford name. My parents never mentioned that name to me.

I suppose it's possible that Bert had a previous wife, and child by her, before he married Mary. Back in the day divorces were something to be ashamed of and not talked about, accept in hushed tones. I don't remember the age difference between dad and Bert but the overall timing seems a little short for Bert to have had a wife and child before Mary.
