He was originally a printer and served his time with Isaiah Thomas in Worcester, Mass. The original firm in Newburyport was Thomas & Whipple. His family had been connected with the book trade in Boston and Salem for two generations. [NEHGS Register, Vol. 13 (Oct. 1859) p. 376." --B. Whipple
