Notes

Deacon James Hammond, of Providence, was undoubtedly a son of William (2) Hammond, who resided in that town. There are no records of the latter's children, and nothing has been discovered to show the time of the birth of Deacon James Hammond. He was the town crier of Providence, and from a poem read at a meeting of the Citizens' Historical Association, March I, 1886, the following concerning Deacon Hammond is extracted:

The Freemen in those days did meet
In the Town House on College street
. Warning was given of the time to come
By good Deacon Hammond with his drum.
In his chaise he'd ride about,
Beat his drum and give a shout,
And attract attention by a noisy Greeting,
Then proclamation he'd make of the Meeting.
