Jeremiah Whipple (son of Ezekial Whipple) had with his family joined the general migration of the Rhode Island and Eastern Families to the west. He took the newly opened water course, Providence. RI to New York City, a new line of steamboats up the Hudson River to Albany, thence via the new Erie Canal to Buffalo, NY then by boat to Cleveland, Ohio, the port of the Connecticut Western Reserve. From here the families moved overland south to land in Athens County, Ohio, formerly a part of the land of the Ohio Company to which territory, settlers from Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island had been coming since the first settlers in Marietta, Ohio in 1788, including Whipple, Olney, Greene and Carpenter families. These families can be found taking up land in Athens County before the Ohio University land grants and in the years following. On December 18, 1838, a deed was made out to Jeremiah Whipple from Moses Arnold in consideration of the sum of $3,945.00 conveying:Tot 1 251.16 Acres in Section 4, Township 9, Range 14: Transferred by the President and Trustees of Ohio University being college or leasehold lands on the east line of Athens Township on the Hock-Hocking River.To this location Jeremiah Whipple brought his family, near by the Ohio University of Athens established February 18, 1804, the first collegiate institution founded north of the Ohio River and surrounded by relatives, friends and neighbors from the home country in New England.In the Record of Wills, Athens County, Volume 7, Page 102, may be found a copy of the will of Jeremiah Whipple made September 26, 1851 and proved August 21, 1855, leaving all property both real and personal to his wife Sarah, who was also appointed executrix, with the exception of $5.00 to each of his 7 children.Children of Jeremiah and Sarah Whipple:
