!PARENTS: N. Combs is not certain of Nicholas' parentage. She writes:
Mandy Katz, who provided the AWT information, has Nicholas Whipple as the son of Nicholas Whipple {10110}and Prudence Olney {16189}. (The information submitted to the Whipple Genweb for Nicholas Whipple {41723) cites the source "Families of Western New York," so here's a Nicholas Whipple who moved to NY.) I have no proof of that, but she may be right based on the census information available for Fairfield, Herkimer, NY. In 1790 Nicholas and his brother Levi Whipple {28259} were living there, along with a William Whipple (another brother?). Nicholas and William R. Whipple lived there in 1800 and 1810; in 1820 Nicholas Whipple, Jr. is on the census, and in 1830 and 1840 Nicholas Whipple is enumerated there. There is a male aged 10-16 in Nicholas Whipple's household in 1800, the right age bracket for Nicholas Whipple, father of Willoughby. (William does not have a male of that age.) The use of "Jr." is not absolute proof that someone is the son of a same-named person; however, there is only one Nicholas Whipple listed on the 1820 census, which should mean that only one is alive. (There is only one male over 45 in Nicholas's household in 1820.)
