!MILITARY: Augustus Woodbury, Second Rhode Island Regiment: A Narrative of Military Operations (Providence: Valpey, Angell, 1875), p. 500 reads: "Lucian A. Whipple, Pawtucket: Corporal, June 6th, 1861; wounded at the battle of Bull Run, July 21st, 1861; sergeant, July 22, 1861; discharged, on surgeon's certificate, December 23rd, 1862." According to email from Jeff Congdon (email hidden) dated 23 Dec 1999, "Based on his age and the Pawtucket connection, he would appear to be [Lucian Augustus Whipple]."
!MILITARY: According to the Adjutant General's Report 1865 Vol. 1 Register of Rhode Island Volunteers 1861-1865 (information provided by J. Lahr-Kreischer, 12 Oct 2000):
Second Regiment, RI Volunteers. Whipple, Lucian A - Private Co. B; Res[sidence] Providence; Enrolled 9-8-1862, mustered in 9-8-1862. May 7, 1864 wounded at the battle of the Wilderness, sent to hospital and borne as absent sick until Aug 1864; Nov 1864 on duty as wagon guard; Dec 1864 on duty at Prig pioneer, and so borne until March 1865. April 5, 1865 died at Armory Square Hospital, of amputation of left thigh, resulting from wounds received while on picket duty at Petersburg, March 27, 1865.
