Notes
!SOURCE: "Descendants of Henry Rice Jerauld," email from Norma Roberts
(email hidden) to Weldon Whipple, 12 Sep 2009. Notes the
following:- In 1881, Nettie, with her parents and siblings, settled in or
near Auburn, Nemaha Co.,Nebraska.
- After the death of her mother (Feb 1882),
the family returned to Knox Co., Illinois, with the exception of her brother,
William (15 years old), who remained in Nemaha County.
- While in Illinois,
she probably lived with her aunt and uncle, Harriet (Jerauld) and Abram L. Van
Riper. When Abram and Harriet Van Riper, and their four children, settled in
Arlington Township, Reno Co., Ks., in 1885, she went with them, leaving her
family in Knox County, Ill.She is listed in the 1885 Kansas census as Nettie
Gerald, age 14, living with her aunt, uncle and cousins.
- She was 16 years
old when she married. Her marriage license has the following notation written
on it: "I, the protector and for the parent, approve this marriage and give
consent to same. (Signed) A. Van Riper"
- John Rhodes has in his possession
two postcards written by Nettie to her children while she and Norman were
visiting relatives out of state. One card is addressed to Miss Lucy Elsworth,
Langdon, Reno co., Ks, and is postmarked Bronson (Branch County), Michigan, on
20 December 1908. Bronson is about 10 miles northeast of Burr Oak, in St Joseph
County. They must have been visiting her sister-in-law, Alice. (Alice had
already moved to Texas so what relative were they visiting?) The card
reads;"Dear Daughter Lucy, I will answer your letter soon. This is the children
school where we are. When you get out of things to eat go to town and get it.
by-by Mrs. B. Elsworth". This postcard has a photo of a one-room schoolhouse on
one side, with the female teacher and 17 students standing in front. The other
postcard is addressed to Evan Elsworth, Langdon, Kansas, Reno Co. The card is
post-marked Auburn, Nebraska, 12 November 1912, evidently mailed while visiting
her brother, William Jerauld. It reads;"Don't write any more. We won't get it.
Dear children, How are you all getting along. We are having a good visit. Meet
us at Arlington Thursday. We will be there. Well this is all for this time.
From Mother at night. Remember at night." One side of the postcard has a
colorized photo of the Frisco Train Depot, at Paola, Kansas (perhaps purchased
on a stop on their train travel).
- One of Ida and Norman's children was just
a little one and crawling when it died. Story goes that Ida had mixed up her
bread and put it in a big pan to raise and had put the pan under the stove. She
had stepped out to hang a load of wash on the cloths line and when she returned
she found the little child had somehow pulled the pan from under the stove and
had fell face down in the dough and had sufficated. I believe this child was
Lawrence the second born child.
