!BIOGRAPHY: His family is a very old one. Historians have traced the family back to Ralph Paganel, who came over to England with William the Conqueror. John Worth was a Royalist who fought for the King during the English Civil War. He and his son, also named John, were killed during the War, and their property confiscated. The remaining sons had to flee England; Lionel went to Massachusetts and married Susanna Whipple, William went to Nantucket Island and married Sarah Macy and became the ancestor of Governor Jonathan Worth of North Carolina and General William Jenkins Worth of the Mexican War fame, Richard settled first in Newbury, MA, where he met up with John Pike, ancestor of General Zebulon Pike. Richard married John Pike's daughter, Mary, and, along with John Pike and Obediah Ayers, was among the first white settlers of the town of Woodbridge, New Jersey. The last son, Francis Worth, fled to Portugal and nothing else is know of him. --M. Spychalski.
