"Seeking the parentage of Dexter Whipple born. Dec. 27, 1784 Rhode Island. Dexter died Sept 18, 1858 Moreau, Saratoga New York and is buried at Big Bend Cemetery (Trumbull) Moreau, New York. He was married1 Rebecca Danforth Sept. 11, 1803 in Queensbury, Washington/Warren Co. New York. Married2 Nancy Wilcox abt 1816 Saratoga/Warren Co. New York.

Dexter was a lumberman by trade, he would purchase large tracts of land and clear it of all lumber, then float it down the Hudson River. According to court records, on one occasion he forgot to purchase the land, and this did upset the legal owner. (I think he personally chopped down most of the trees in Washington/Warren Co.) About 1816 Dexter and his new wife settled in Moreau, where he purchased more land and took a second job as a farmer. --Dorothy (email hidden)"

Cites the Morning Star (newspaper), Glen Falls, Warren Co., N.Y., Tuesday Morning, May 9, 1883: "Nancy Whipple, relict of Dexter Whipple, and mother of Archibald Whipple, Feeder Dam, died at one o'clock yesterday morning, aged eighty-two years. Deceased was a Christian lady, and was highly respected for many estimable qualities. The funeral will take place at two o'clock this afternoon."

!SOURCE: Email from Dorothy Grosz (email hidden) to Weldon Whipple, 28 Sep 2006. Regarding the name "Betsey" given to Nancy Wilcox Whipple, Dorothy notes:

• The name Eliza Whipple appears on the 1850 census, and subsequently identified as the daughter of Dexter Whipple. The 1850 census does not ask the relationship to the head of household. In the 1855 census Betsey is shown as the wife of Dexter Whipple and Nancy is not on the census. In the 1860 census (and all subsequent) it shows Seth head of household and Nancy keeping house.
• At no time prior to or after the 1855 census have I found Nancy Wilcox Whipple being referred to as "Betsey". I believe that the enumerator (on the 1855 census) simply dropped the name of Nancy , and Betsey (Eliza) was placed in (out of order), Eliza Whipple & Betsey Whipple are one and the same.
• Eliza Whipple, (age 14 on the 1850 census) could very well be the daughter of Dexter Whipple she might be a granddaughter, or she could be the wife of Seth Whipple. Keep in mind that Samuel Whipple married Annis when she was just 14 years old, and Dexter married Nancy when she was 14 maybe 15 years oldRWhat do you think?
