!BIOGRAPHY: "William in 1851 joined a company of "gold seekers" and went to California by the Isthmus of Panama route. He does not appear to have spent any time in the mines, but worked in San Francisco at the trade of carpenter, later working on a ranch. In 1858 he returned east, married, and settled on his father's farm in Clarkson, New York. In 1864 he joined with his father-in-law, William H. Watson, and purchased a tract of land about one mile north of Medina, Orleans County, New York, where he resided the remaining [years] of his life." --Ward Whipple
