Dr. Thomas S. Whipple was a well-known dentist and longtime resident of San Jose. He shocked his family and friends when he committed suicide by inhaling coal gas on the night before his 45th birthday. Dr. Whipple was born in Windham County, Conn., and became an orphan at an early age, his mother having died before he was a year old, and his father following three years later. He was schooled in Courtland County, New York and Ohio before coming to San Jose as a teenager in 1864. He became an apprentice in the dental business with his uncle, Dr. C. R. Spaw, eventually taking over the practice when Dr. Spaw retired in 1887. Along with this valuable business, Dr. Whipple also owned a 65-acre apricot, cherry, and prune orchard four miles east of San Jose. He married Mary L. Flemming in November 1873 and they had two children, Frank E. and Raymond T. Whipple, who were 16 and 7 years old, respectively, at the time of Dr. Whipple's death. The doctor's suicide was attributed to his struggles with nervous disease, dyspepsia, and chronic insomnia. (San Jose Evening News, Nov. 25, 1892)
