!BIOGRAPHY: "My great great great grandfather was the first Whipple in my family's history. He was a Sioux chief in southern Minnesota (as were all of his fathers). He fought along side Chief Red Cloud and others against the 'whiteman.' His name was (Chief) Red Legs until he was forced to take a more traditional European type of name. I don't know if it was given to, or chosen by him, but he got the surname Whipple (a popular bishop [Bishop Henry Benjamin Whipple--Bishop of Minnesota] of the time) and the first name Thomas. His son Benjamin was a scout for Gen. Custer. He was not at all involved in the Little Bighorn incident because Custer decided he no longer needed to use the knowledge of his scouts.
"My family has found several photos of both Thomas and Benjamin. One of Thomas is among a group of chiefs that traveled to Washington D.C. for a treaty in 1858. One of Benjamin has him and another of Custers scouts in the background of a photo of Custer himself." --M. Whipple
