ROBERT STEWART WHIPPLE: author, inventor, conservator, researcher of pyrometrics for industrial applications (thermometers)He came to Cambridge in 1898 as a personal assistant to Horace Darwin (youngest son of Charles Darwin) and was the founder of the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company, acting as its Managing Director and Chairman. He He funded the establishment of the Whipple Museum , for whom it was later named, at the Department of History and Philosophy at Cambridge University. He was a collector of scientic, medical and other instruments, books and objects, among which was the deathmask of Sir Isaac Newton. Robert Whipple donated his collections to the Whipple Museum in 1944.(The Whipple Museum holds scientic instruments and artifacts dating back to medieval times. The Museum also holds some of the collections of Sir Charles Darwin. Robert Whipple's son George also contributed financially to the museum. )
