The following information was provided by Find A Grave Contributor: Suzanne Blanchard (48789275) but I have not confirmed any of it.....
William Jay, Mary Elizabeth, and Samuel Woodward are not Dr. Whipple's biological children. Their father, William Babbitt Haynes, son of the Reverend Lemuel Haynes, was killed in a shipwreck in 1839 when Mary Case was pregnant with Samuel, who is named after his uncle, William's twin Samuel Woodbridge Haynes.
Mary remarried to Dr. Whipple and he adopted the children as his own.
