!SOURCE: "Guy Whipple and Descendants of Hiram Whipple," email from N. Combs to
Weldon Whipple, 6 Mar 2011. Cites/notes the following, relative to "Guy Whipple
(110614), a miner living in Grass Valley, CA when the 1920 and 1930 censuses
were taken":
- On his WWI draft registration in Grass Valley, Nevada, CA
dated Sept. 2, 1918, Oliver Guy Whipple stated that he was b. 8 Sept. 1880
in the US and named Mrs. C. L. Hathaway of Orion, MI as his nearest
relative. "Mrs. C. L. Hathaway" is Mabel C. Whipple, daughter of Alson W.
Whipple {99438} and his second wife Margaret (Maggie)
Middleton.
- According to the 1880 and 1900 censuses, Maggie Middleton
was born in Canada. On the 1910 and 1930 censuses, Guy Whipple {110614} states
that his mother was born in Canada. Although in 1910 and 1930 he says his
father was born in MI, in 1920 he gives his father's birth place as NY (where
Alson W. Whipple 99438 was born).
- On the 1900 census Maggie (Middleton)
Whipple states that she was the mother of three children, two of whom are
living. One son died in 1877, and Mabel was still alive in 1920. That
leaves one child unaccounted for; in 1900 Guy would be 20, possibly already in
CA working in the mines. His birth date of Sept. 1880 sufficiently follows
Mabel's birth date of May 1879.
- Alson W. Whipple {99438} died Feb.
21, 1915 and was a widower as Margaret (Middleton) Whipple had died Nov. 25,
1914. Thus, when Guy Whipple registered for the WWI draft in 1918, his
nearest relative would be Mabel (Whipple) Hathaway, his sister.
