The 18 Mar 1880 edition of the Boston Post reported "The janitor of the building No. 4 Hamilton place found the occupant of one of the rooms, Mr. Matthew J. Whipple, dead in his bed on Wednesday forenoon about 9 ouclock. Mr. Whipple has been known for many years as a dealer in artistsu materials, and for thirty-two years occupied a store at 35 Cornhill. Previous to that he was with the firm of John P. Jewett & Co., booksellers of this city. He was a brother to E. P. Whipple, the well-known editor. Medical Examiner Draper was summoned, but assigned no cause for his death. At 10 ouclock on Tuesday night he was as well as usual, and it is not known at what hour he expired."The 20 Mar 1880 edition of the Boston Post reported "The funeral of the late Matthew J. Whipple took place Friday forenoon, Rev. Dr. Bartol officiating. The remains were taken to Mount Auburn."
His death certificate lists his birthplace as Gloucester and his parents as Matthew, born Danvers and Lydia G., born Nova Scotia.
