"Came across info on Captain Joseph H. Whipple, who died in Perote, Mexico June 30, 1847 when serving with the 5th Infantry. According to 'West Point graduates in the Olden Times' () he was 36 years old at the time. That would make his birth year about 1811 which fits with the info you have listed for Joseph Hall Whipple.

From other records I have found on him, he served with both the 5th and the 8th Infantry during his time with the U.S. military."
