!BIRTH: Died at age 77 yrs., 4 mos., 9 days. --N. Dorian, 17 Aug 2000.
!OBITUARY: Quoted from a scrapbook of newspaper clippings kept by Lillian Corson Washburn, great-grandmother of Nancy Dorian:
"Heman Whipple of Solon, was instantly killed by being knocked from a trestle by a Canadian Pacific train at his lumber camps near Jackman [ME], Tuesday. The accident happened near a little station known as Mackamp. The engineer did not see the unfortunate man until the train rounded a curve but a few rods away and too late to prevent striking him. His body was taken to Solon."Mr. Whipple was one of the best known men in the county and his sad death will be a matter of regret to hundreds of his friends and acquaintances. He was a man whose word was as much respected as his bond. He has been engaged in lumbering all his life and left home several years before he reached the age of 21, paying his father for his time. He once said that the debt then contracted was one that did him a great deal of good and taught him a valuable lesson. It was paid promptly as agreed and entering the employ of the Coburns, he soon became one of their trusted agents in the carrying on of their lumber business. During the years that he looked after their interests they had none other more faithful or in whom they placed more implicit confidence.
"Prudent, saving, untiring in his efforts and very industrious, he gathered a fortune variously estimated and by some placed as high as $75,000. Simple in his tastes and mode of living, his expenses were small, yet he was one of the most sympathetic men possible to meet. Strangers or friends were always sure of a warm welcome at his home. He was 77 years old last January and has been engaged for the past few weeks looking after the Moose River drive for the 58th consecutive year.
"Mr. Whipple leaves a widow, a son Lewis, who is in charge of the office of the Moosehead Co., and one daughter, the wife of Dr. S. F. Greene of Solon."
