George Mathews Whipple was a Physicist of note and served as the Superintendent of the Kew Observatory in 1876 until his death. He wrote for the Quarterly Journal (Meteorological Soc), and served on the council of the Meteorological Society and acted as its foreign Secretary. He was a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Soc and an asst't examiner at the University of London. He published a Report on the Eruption of Krakotoa pub by the Royal Society in 1888 (magnetic section).
