"The death of G.A. Whipple at the hospital in Kirksville, Missouri was announced. Although for sometime his days have been numbered yet he bravely fought for life to the end. The body was brought to Greenfield on Monday, and the funeral was held at the Presbyterian Church on Tuesday. The I.O.O.F. Lodge conducted the burial service of the order. The funeral service was attended by a large number of old neighbors from the farming vicinity which was the home of the family before the removal to town a year ago."At the age of 14, he went to North Dakota where he lived with a brother until the year 1902 when he came to Iowa. He was united in marriage with Miss Emma H. Lombard of Greenfield in 1909. 2 children were born to them, Edward Allen aged 9 and Walter Eugene aged 7. Beside his wife and little boys, he leaves to mourn his decease his mother, Mrs. Deborah E. Smith, and four brothers - Willis of Anacortes, Washington, Arthur of Cambridge, Illinois, Harry of Peoria, Illinois, Windsor of Creston, Iowa. Other relatives at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Whipple and niece Laura Stach of Cambridge, Illinois.
"Mr. Whipple was converted at age 10 and united with the Congregational Church of Cambridge Illinois. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. F. Lodge of Greenfield. His illness which resulted in his death covered a period of almost 3 years, a part of which time he suffered intensely but bore it all with true soldier like courage and fortitude. During the earlier stage of the Spanish Influenza epidemic, he contracted the disease, and for a time his life was despaired of, but he rallied and for a time his family and friends hoped he might have many years of life left him. But a few weeks ago the disease with which he had suffered returned with increased severity. With the hope that an operation might prolong his life, on New Years evening he went to the A.S.O. Hospital at Kirksville, Missouri where an operation was performed. But his wearied weakened body was unable to stand the shock of the operation and he passed away. He was a devoted and dutiful son, a kind and loving husband an father, a good friend and neighbor."
