!PARENTS: "In the 1850 Census for Athens County Ohio, a Ruth Whipple appears in the household directly prior to that of Edward Whipple (age 27). Ruth is 50 years old and lives with Russell Whipple (age 18), and Rufus Whipple (age 16) - presumably her sons? Is Ruth the mother of my Edward Whipple, and are Russell and Rufus his brothers? Ruth is apparently widowed at that time - what was her husband's name who was the father of my Edward Whipple?" --Shelley

!IDENTITY: Candice states that "Edward was Joseph Whipples First son from his first marraige. Joseph remarried after Rebeckah Bowyer, Edwards mother died from the consumption, When he remarried he had another son, my line, Edwin Whipple. I look forward to hearing more, if you have any questions you can ask I might be able to remember.....but nothing solid. Edward was certainly born in Ohio as were his 5 brothers and sisters." The Edward to which Candice refers (RIN 42984) was born in Montevideo, Minnesota and "on the census in 1880, [was] still at home [in Montevideo, Minnesota]." This is probably not the same Edward, since (according to Shelley) Edward was in Harrison County, Iowa, in 1870 and 1880. --Weldon Whipple, 27 Dec 2003.

  Emaline's {85947} death would have occurred between Rosa's birth 1872-1873 and the 1880 census (which could mean a death after June 1879).
• It doesn't appear that the possible mother/brothers of Edward Whipple are in the Whipple Genweb. Here's info from the census on them:
  1850 Census, Lee, Athens, OH, p.176:
  • Whipple, Ruth 50 b. abt 1800 in VA {note that on the 1880 census Edward says his mother was born in VA};
  • Whipple, Russell 18 b. abt 1832 in VA;
  • Whipple, Rufus 16 b. abt 1834 in VA.

[Source 1 substantiating her maiden name: pension file for Edward and Emeline's daughter Louisa (Whipple) Smith Smith Hooker Legan; she was also called Lois.] [Source 2 substantiating her maiden name: death certificate for Edward and Emeline's daughter, Isabelle (Whipple) Gladman.]
• It is nearly certain that Edward Whipple was the son of Thomas and Ruth Whipple. Siblings of Edward include Rufus Whipple and Charles Russell Whipple. (The later appears as simply Russell Whipple in the 1850 census.)
