!BIRTH: "In or around Sardenia, Erie, New York." --C.J. Barber, 25 Aug 2003
!MILITARY: "A veteran of the Civil War." --C.J. Barber, 25 Aug 2003
!IDENTITY: "The indentity of Phoebe Lafferty's husband has been a great mystery. Supposedly her son was born in Sardenia, Erie, NY, and by 1850 she is living with her parents in Machias, Cattaraugus, NY. Her son is enumerated as Edwin Whipple, and is also listed as an 8 year old head of house.( I think thats humerous) Obviously its an error in placement.
However, 1840 census for either area does not lead to one clue as to who he might have been." --C.J. Barber, 2 Sep 2003

My Granfather was in the Civil War and did enlist in the 23rd Ill Vol Infantry, he must have been around 21-22 years of age when he enlisted. This group was captured and later given their freedom, somewhere in Mo., this was early in the War. Of course the darn fool then went back to Erie Pennsylvania and joind the 111th Pennsylvania Volunteers. This elite force was one of the better drilled and trained infantry groups in the army. This group proved their worth many times throughout the war. There are several books that are avail giving an accurate account of the 111th Vol Infantry. My Grandfather is listed in "Soldier True" as being wounded in around Lookout Mountain in Tenn. My father mentioned this to me as I was growing up. His name is listed on the Pa Memorial Monument In Gettysburg, Pa.
