Reverend Elden Cole WhippleMay 4, 1905-February 6, 2004
Elden Cole Whipple was born in Bellingham, Washington. He was the first of Otis Grant Whipple and Julia Bertie Cole Whipple's three children, followed by Lois Ann Whipple Walton, 1907 and Otis Grant Whipple, Jr., 1911.
The family lived in Bellingham, and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and Seattle, where in 1922, Elden graduated from Broadway High School. He graduated from the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA), went to China with his family and taught English to Chinese students and studied the Chinese language. Elden attended UCLA and graduated from the University of Washington in 1931 with a major in Chinese language and Oriental Studies.
Mr. Whipple married Evelyn Ethel Watson in Seattle, 1927. Following the birth of their first child, Elden Cole Whipple, Jr., 1931 in Bellingham, Washington, they went to China with the China Inland Mission ministering in Hwoshan, Anhwei. Lorna Lee Whipple Black and Dwight Wilbert Whipple were born in Kuling, Kiangsi, China, in 1934 and 1936 respectively. Julia Nettie Whipple Wayner was born in Bellingham, Washington, 1939. Carleson, also of the CIM, in China and they served briefly in Kaifeng. They were transferred to Tsingtao, Shantung. The whole family was together when Pearl Harbor was bombed and they spent the next two years imprisoned by the Japanese in their Tsingtao home and in concentration camps in Tsingtao and Weihsien. They were repatriated in 1943 in an exchange of American and Japanese prisoners of war.
Mr. Whipple served as Dean of Men and Professor of Missions at Multnomah School of the Bible, Portland, Oregon 1944-1946. Following World War II Mr. Whipple's service with the Mission continued in various executive positions in North America: Vancouver, B.C., Philadelphia, PA and Los Angeles, CA. In 1971 Elden and Marian retired to Laguna Hills, CA where Marian Whipple died in 1986. Elden moved in 1989 to Warm Beach Senior Community near Stanwood, WA. Following a stroke and brief hospitalization, he died peacefully on February 6, 2004.
