"On the 14th of June, 1860, the J. W. Whipple family was living on a farm in the Lake Township of Berrien County, Michigan. J. M. Whipple was 49 years old and had been born in New York. His wife was Eliza age 40 and also born in New York. They had five children living with them including Spencer age 20 born Ohio, Darwin age 18 also born in Ohio, S. J. (female) age 3 born in Michigan and Dwight at 6 months. (Census page 455)."Also cites the 1870 Census:
"On the 11th of August, 1870 a census taker visited a Whipple family farm in the Lake Township of Berrien County Michigan. They were served by the Charlottesville Post Office. The head of the family was John Whipple, age 59, born in New York. He had the largest farm in the census page valued at $6,000. The next largest farm was valued at $4,000. He had the largest amount of personal property - $1,500. The next largest was $500. His wife was Eliza age 51 also born in New York. At this time they had three children all born in Michigan. Their names and ages included Sarah 12, Dwight 10, and Ella age 7. (Census page 202A)."
