"Darwin was Under Sheriff in Eau Claire City and resigned to take part in the Civil War, serving in Unit 16, Wisconsin infantry and mustering out on July 12, 1865. He was later proprietor of a wollen mill and a collector for Whipple and Dunn collector and loan agents."

Darwin C. Whipple of Eau Claire, WI enlisted as a Captain on 05 January 1864; Commission in Company H, 16th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin on 28 January 1864. WHIPPLE, Russell Horace was born about 1782 in Massachusetts. He married Laura Kellogg about 1816 in Marion, Wayne County, New York and they had a daughter, Marie Wilson and two sons, Darwin and Henry R. Laura died in 1839 and he married Ann Bodfitch Lamb October 12, 1843 in Naperville. He was a farmer. He was a Charter member of Euclid Chapter No. 13, Royal Arch Masons. He died September 28, 1859 in Naperville, DuPage County, Illinois and was buried in the Naperville, Cemetery. (src: Find A Grave)
