Retired from the Boston Globe in 1979 after 43 years with the newspaper. He was its first Ombudsman. As editor of its editorial page, he advocated a halt to the U.S. bombing of North Vietnam and called for a negotiated end of the war in a series of six editorials during the spring of 1967. His editorial of 22 October 1973 urging Pres. Nixon to resign was the first published by a major American newspaper. He obtained an interview with Boston Red Sox baseball star Ted Williams in the late 1940s by telling the slugger he would give his right eye for an interview and then plucked out a glass eye he wore because of an injury.
