His parents went to or perhaps came from Oakham Massachusetts area and this is where Charles was at age 18. Charles was well educated,YattendingY two colleges, one of which was Middlebury College in Vermont, from which he earned his degree in 1827. Francis Putnam Whipple was an undergraduate at the time.

After graduation Charles taught school at in several towns in Vermont settling in Chester Vermont for several years where he became Superintendent of schools. He was also inY Orleans Massachusetts for a brief time. Just prior to moving to MassachusettsY heYmarried Mary Onion
