Bard "is noted in the History of Concord, NH, James Lyford, 1896, Vol I, as being a member "Pro Duce et Republica" , an honorary group of horsemen commonly called the Governor's Horse Guard organized in 1860 to escort the elected Governor on the march from Portsmouth to Concord and for other ceremonious duties." Heidibeth2 also cites (in addition to the 1860 and 1870 censuses) the 1880 census:
