The Bostonian, Vol. III, Oct 1895-Mar 1896, page 263 states: SThe father of the Whipples was a sea-captain, and had weathered many a storm off Cape Ann and Cape Cod, but he died while his three sons were yet young. These boys were Augustus, a robust, rosy, fine-looking lad; Matthew, of large heart, hut puny physique and Edwin, whose small frame was remarkable only for prominent eyes and full forehead.T" Greg asks: "Do you think there's any chance that George Washington Whipple, allegedly another child of Matthew and Lydia (Gardiner) Whipple, and Augustus William Whipple are one and the same?"

Augustus William (Mathew 1 ) Whipple was born in 1810 in Danvers, Essex, Massachusetts. The death certificate of his daughter Frances, lists his birthplace as Salem, Mass.He married first, 9 Aug 1838 in Saint John, Saint John Co., New Brunswick, Margaret Deveber. She was the only daughter of W.E.N. Deveber, Esq. of Saint John. The 18 Aug 1838 edition of the New Brunswick Courier reported: "m. Thursday eve., 9 th inst., by Rev. Dr. Gray, Augustus W. Whipple, Esq. / Margaret Deveber only d/o W.E.N. Deveber, Esq. of this city. St. John Co." She died 6 May 1839, age 20. The 18 Aug 1838 [i.e. 18 May 1839?] edition of the New Brunswick Courier reported: "d. 9 o'clock, Monday morn., 6 th inst., Margaret Whipple w/o A.W. Whipple, Esq. and d/o W.E.N. Deveber, Esq., age 20, left husband."
