!MOTHER: Although C.A.H. Newton shows Abigail as the second child of Ira Whipple and Sarah Hollenbeck Secor, J. Lahr-Kreischer reports: "On the 1850 Rockland, Sullivan, NY census, [father] Ira is with his parents as are three of his children William age 2, Abigail age 6 and Mary age 14. I think (and at this point this is only a half educated guess) that the reason Ira and these children were with his parents was because his 1st wife (Celina) died and he needed assistance in looking after the children before he remarried. ... Without any additional supporting information (other than the census) this is just a guess. We don't know when he married Sarah, nor do we know when Celina died. If we had that information, a better idea could be made."
