!RESIDENCES: In his youth he started westward to join Custer's forces, but arrived too late, and eventually worked for a time on a wheat ranch in Dakota Territory. In the early 1880's he attended Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) and thereafter taught school for a time. In 1890 he and his wife moved to Chicago, and from that time until 1903 he worked as a Railway Mail postal clerk on the Chicago-Buffalo run. In 1903 he moved with his family to the Scofield farm in Leoni, Michigan, where he farmed most of his life. His last six years were spent at the home of his daughter, Virginia Idelle Whipple Beam, in Detroit, where he died March 6, 1948. (Written by Chandler H. Whipple.) Op. cit. p. 98.
