Letter is in the possession of the historical society of Stonington (Connecticut), transcribed by R. Gilebarto and sent to the Whipple Website, 6 Nov 1999.

!MILITARY: "Served as a Captain in the War of 1812. He was called into service on September 14, 1814, under the command of Captain St. John in Scenectady, NY. He was a resident of Lansingburgh, New York according to his military papers. He was honorably discharged at the city of New York at the expiration of his term. He was issued 120 acres to which he was entitled undr the 'Act granting boundary land to certain officers and soldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the Militia States.'

According to one of the document covers, Abel Whipple was a musician. In the company mutser roll (Colden's 5 Artillery and Infantry, New York, Militia), the word 'fifer' is written in on the first two musters, and then 'drum' on the last two. (Original copies of the 1812 Papers are in possession of Sandra Hyatt Bausch.)" --S. Bausch
