!BIOGRAPHY: "JK Vail traveled south as a young man to Louisiana near New Orleans where he was engaged in the surreying for several important railroads. Imbibing Southern ideas from his associations, when the war of the Rebellion broke out, Mr. Vail joined the 'Lousiana Tigers,' a famous regiment of the Conferate Army. He served throughout the war, and was taken prisoner twice, - First at Fort Donelson, but was afterward exchanged, and entered the service again. The second time we was captured was at Jaskson, Miss. and he was kept a prisoner until the war was closed.

"He moved to Mt. Kisco, NY about 15 years prior to his death and was associated with Wm. Andrews in running the Mount Kisco house as a hotel and summer boarding house. Later he kept a large summer resort at the Kirbyville, but gave it up a year prior to his death, when it was condemned by the New York City, Dept of Public works.

"Mr. Vail was a consistent Democrat and was an active worker in the ranks of his party. He was at one time Police Justice of his Village, being appointed to the office by the Village Board of Trustees. His latest public work was was when he acted as an auctioneer of the Dept of Public Works, and sold all the condemned houses, stores, barns, etc, in the Mount Kisco and New Castle area." -- S.
