!MILITARY: "Although in his fiftieth year when the Civil War broke out and so exempt from military service, his patriotism for the Union cause led to his enlistment, 30 Nov. 1863, as a trooper in Co. D of the famous First Vermont Cavalry Regiment, and he was mustered in on 4 Jan. 1864. His company took part in Gen. Kilpatrick's daring raid on Richmond, Va., 2 Mar. 1864, in which Mr. Stone was among those captured; and, he was confined in Libby Prison, where he died, 4 Apr. 1864." --J.G. Bartlett
