!BIOGRAPHY: "Went to California in 1850 by sailing vessel around Cape Horn, and a few years later went to Australia. Before the Civil War he settled in Brazil where he became a successful and wealthy ranchman and tobacco and rubber planter. His plantations of over five thousand acres, called Stone Colony, are located near Itacoatiara on the Amazon River, in a vast wilderness over seven hundred miles from the mouth of that mighty river. After his relatives in Dana had heard nothing from him for several years, he suddenly visited them from Brazil about 1866, and thereafter occasionally corresponded with them until his death in Brazil about 1913." --J.G. Bartlett.
