!MILITARY: Private in the Revolutionary War; was made a captain in the Steuben County (N.Y.) Militia in his mid 40's (1804). --T.N. Pratt

Pvt./Capt. Amos Stone's [1759-1842] Service in the Rev. War:

Pvt.: Mass. Line, Boston, Fort Ticonderoga, Battle of Saratoga, Battle of Monmonth. 31.5 months credited service.

Served in the Revolution as a private from Greenwich, Mass. Enlisted 1776 for one year and served around Boston during the British evacuation and at Ticonderoga. Re-enlisted May 1777 as part of the reinforcement of the Northern Army and served 2-1/2 mos. Re-enlisted Sept.1777 - served at the Battle of Saratoga, and was present at the surrender of General Burgoyne's army 17 Oct1777. Re-enlisted May 1778 for 8 mo. and served at the Battle of Monmouth. Re-enlisted for 5 mo. term in Apr. 1779 - present on duty and witness to the hanging of Major Andre on 2 Oct1780. Discharged at West Point abt. Jan. 1781. Served under Capts. B. Bullard, J. Thompson, J. Banister, D. Shays; Cols. A. Whitcomb, J. Cushing, R. Putnam, N. Hale, Wood, Warner; Gen. B. Lincoln; Brig. Gens. J. Glover, Paterson; Maj. Gens. J. Sullivan, H. Gates and A. St. Clair

Also of interest, Amos was involved in Shay's rebellion and, after their failure to take the arsenal at Springfield, MA, spent time in the wilderness of Penn. before he ultimately returned to NY and was one of the first settlers in Pleasant Valley, Steuben Co.

On 22 Feb. 1804, Amos Stone was commissioned a captain in the Steuben County militia. ("New York Council of Appointment," vol. 1, p. 708.)
