(5-9) Brooke Astor on the special occasion of her 100th Birthday. A generous philanthropist, she has distributed over $195 million from the Vincent Astor Foundation to charitable, civic and cultural organizations in New York. She maintains a home on Mount Desert Island and created the Astor Incentive Awards, a fund for educators at Mount Desert High School and Mount Desert Elementary School. She has also created the Astor Fund for Special Opportunities for students of the arts, social sciences and natural and physical sciences. She is a faithful supporter of the Northeast Harbor Library. We extend our congratulations to Mrs. Astor on the centennial celebration of her birth and we extend our best wishes to her;"and according to an item in Associated Press, on the occasion of her centenary, Mrs Astor was born 30 March 1902.

'Brooke Astor Turns 100
American treasure Mrs. Brooke Astor
celebrated her 100th year Saturday evening with 100 close friends at the
Rockefeller estate in Pocantico Hills. Guests, which included Kofi and Nane
Annan and Henry and Nancy Kissinger, gathered at the estates playhouse for
dinner - the same location Senator John D. Rockefeller IV had celebrated his
21st birthday over 40 years ago. Mr. Annan was given the place of honor seated
to Mrs. Astor's right while David Rockefeller, the host for the evening, sat to
her left. Mrs. Astor's son Anthony Marshall gave a toast, reminding guests that
his mother had been born before the zipper was popularized, before five states
had been admitted to the union and a year before the Wright brothers flew their
plane. An array of New York society was in attendance to pay homage to the icon
of class and style.'"
