Death of an Old Resident and Highly Respected Lady

Mrs. Mary Hooker Whipple, died last Friday night at the advanced age of 97 years. For the last few years her home has been with Mrs. M. B. Rumsey, a distant relative of the deceased, where she received the tender care and devoted attention which her advanced years and feeble health required. Mrs. Whipple was born in Vermont in January, 1791. She was the last of a family of ten children. She was twice married. By her first husband, James Hooker, she had two sons, the oldest James C. Hooker now resides in Rome, Italy, and has for many years contributed to the comfort and happiness of his aged and beloved parent, by his frequent visits, and his generous financial assistance. It was his oft expressed desire that his mother's declining years should be made as comfortable and pleasant as possible, and no expense should be spared to contribute to this end and it will gratify him in his distant home to know that his wishes were faithfully carried out, and to the last the mother made frequent mention of the tender love and filial devotion of this affectionate son.

Some time after the death of her first husband she came with her boys to Westfield and resided for many years with her father David Rumsey. When about 60 years of age she married James Whipple, Esq., with whom she lived several years when he died. Mrs. Whipple was a woman of strong convictions and decided religious principles, a member of the Baptist church. She was a consistent Christian, an efficient worker and never weary in well doing, and now has gone to that rest into which she has long desired to enter and be with Christ. With quiet resignation she surveyed the inevitable event, and looked calmly forward to her future inheritance, and by an unfaltering faith took firm hold of the promised rest. She lived a noble and Christian life, and now that she has gone, her memory will be cherished most by those who knew her best.

"When trembling limbs refuse their weight,
And films slow gathering dim the sight,
And clouds obscure the mental light,
'Tis natures precious boon to die."
