Robert Whipple, of Portsmouth county of Rockingham NH, petitioned the court in 1782 for a divorce from his wife Eunice Pike. It was stated in the petition that Robert was a mariner, had been married to Eunice about 10 years when in August of 1780 he sailed to the West Indies, was taken prisoner and held in England for almost two years. Upon returning to Portsmouth he found his wife had given birth to a child not his own and so filed for divorce which was granted in Dec 1782. (Laws of New Hampshire During the Revolutionary Years)
