!SOURCE: Email from Kathy (email hidden) to the Whipple Website, 13 Jul 2006. "Charles Packard appears to have been both a medical doctor and a reverend"; "His obituary was in the Bath Independent on March 27, 1909 and notes that he ws born in Brunswick, Maine -- the son of Prof. Alpheus F. Packard who acted as the president of Bowdoin College for many years. His grandfather was one of the first presidents of Bowdoin and that is where Charles A. graduated from in 1848. He initially spent some time working as civil engineer for Maine Central Railroad. And then went to Washington D. C. where he was the private secretary to his uncle, President Franklin Pierce. He returned to Maine and graduated from Bowdoin Medical College in 1856, first practicing in Waldoboro, Maine Then Charles went to new York City for a while and for health reasons returned to Maine and a practice in Bath. he was the physician for 20 years at the Military and Naval Orphan's Home here. The obituary notes he is survived by three brothers, none in Maine, but mentions no wives or children. Perhaps while he was in New York City, he met Carrie. "
