ROBERT EARLE WHIPPLE - Portsmouth
Tuesday, March 16, 2004
ROBERT EARLE WHIPPLE, 76, of 27 Donna Drive, formerly of Earley Street, a career Navy man and retired maintenance worker, died yesterday at the Rhode Island Veterans Home, in Bristol.

He was the husband of Mabel Manning) Whipple; they had been married for 50 years. Born in Boston on Feb. 27, 1928, he was the son of the late Claude and Effie (Blue) Whipple.

A Navy veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War, he had served for more than 20 years before retiring from the service in 1967 as a chief petty officer. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve, Branch 19; the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 5390; and the AllVets.

After returning to civilian life, he had worked at the Naval War College, in Newport, in the maintenance department, until retiring in 1992.

Mr. Whipple was a member of the Newport Lodge of Elks.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Michael S. Whipple of Newport and Brian K. Whipple of Tiverton; a daughter, Gail Whipple of Middletown; and two grandsons.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
