I note that the 1 September 1947 edition of the New York Times carries an obituary for "James Henry Mairs," who died the previous day in New York City, "in his eighty-first year." This obituary states that he was born in Brooklyn, "the son of William Henry and Ellen Olney Mairs." He and his father were wall paper manufacturers with their business located in Brooklyn, Long Island.
The obit states that, "He leaves a sister, Mrs. Walter B. Duryea." Ellen Mairs married Walter Bartow Duryea (ca. 1877 - 1954), of New York City and the Hamptons, Long Island, the subject of my present study. The Duryea-Mairs couple had one child, a son William Mairs Duryea (md. Atwell), and had two sons William Mairs Duryea, Jr. and James Mairs Duryea.
It would appear that sibling William, John D., and Olney Blanchard Mairs predeceased their brother James and sister Ellen.
