!BIOGRAPHY: "Instrumental in the early economic success of Providence, R.I. On 28 Jan 1711, Providence granted Nathaniel Brown of Rehoboth, Mass., a 1/2 acre plot on Weybosset Neck (just above the Weybosset Bridge and now the site of St. John's Church) so long as the land was used to build sea-going vessels. There, Nathaniel Brown and his sons built sloops and schooners for the West Indies trade. Historians credit Nathaniel Brown's shipbuilding enterprise with being one of the key factors in the commercial success of Providence in the early 18th century." --D. Tucker
