!SOURCE: Email from Howard M. Faulkner (email hidden) to Weldon Whipple, 28 Aug 2002. Spells name Hillel Baker. He writes:
"Re: spelling of Hillel and Dorcus Baker: Here are some of my sources I have for these two relatives:
- Hillel's nick name which followed him into adulthood, according to my grandmother (his granddaughter) was "Hillery". In fact I was the one who learned of the correct spelling when I started my genealogical quest some eight years ago. I started with him as I was given a primitive portrait that was made of him c. 1850.
- Over two dozen photocopies ( not transcripts) of probate and guardianship court records from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, County of Franklin, Court House, located in Greenfield Massachusetts, relative to the death of Hillel and guardian ship of two minor children at his death.
- From the same court referenced above, Probate Record photocopy of the fact that Hillel Baker was named as "administrator" for Hannah Baker, his grandmother (BTW, whose husband was also named Hillel). This document has his signature on it as "Hillel".
- Photocopies (not transcripts), of Town of Orange, Massachusetts, birth records for his children with his name spelled out.
- Photocopies, (not transcripts), of the 1850 and 1860, US Federal Censuses where his name is spelled out in full.
- Two signed letters from his adult children to the above mentioned Court, with reference to their father, "Hillel".
- Photocopies of Town of Orange, MA cemetery records with his name spelled out
- Death Certificate from the Town of Orange, MA
- Letter and other documents from the United States Postal Service Historian in Washington, DC (Hillel was U. S. Postmaster at North Orange from 1843,1859, in every case his full name is spelled out on their records).
- Hand written notes in Ira Baker's Family Bible (Ira was the son of Hillel).
- "The History of North Orange, Massachusetts - 1781-1924" published by the North Orange Reunion Association, 62 pages, hardcover. This publication makes numerous references to "Hillel" Baker, including a picture of his home.
- "Cemetery Records of North Orange, Massachusetts", published by Aceto Bookman, 5721 Antietam Drive, Sarasota Florida, 34231-4903. Page 6 references tombstones for:
"Hillel Baker 1817-1869" and "Dorcus, dau of Eugene & Harriet Baker and adopted daughter of Widow Hannah Baker, d. July 5, 1832"- Photographs I have taken of the tombstones for Hillel Baker, Ann P. Baker and of Dorcus
There are many many other records that I have witnessed with the spelling for my great great grandfather as "Hillel Baker". He held elected positions in both local and State government on several occasions. I have never seen his name with any other spelling except occasional family reference to "Hillery". That nick name has never appeared in public records to the best of my knowledge.
