Major Reuben Arnold Whipple born August 11, 1846 Smithfield, RI, removed to Adams, MA with parents when he was 7 years old. Descended from Col Abram Whipple who was in the War of 1812 and later Captain of the RI National Guard (note source refers to Abram as his grandfather?)Enlisted 8th Reg in the Civil War and joined 2nd Regiment as Captain. Lost his son by disease in service at Santiago de Cuba. Commissioned Captain 26th Reg US Volunteers, Col Edmund Rice commanding. Went into business with his father at Adams, MA then became Supt of Streets, Bridges and Parks there.
